By Ashley Nicole Barker
You’ve packed all your things, moved out of the parental household, and taken your first step to adulthood. You’ve finally made it to college. The first few weeks will be a whirlwind of new classes, activities and friends. But, after you’ve found your way around campus, convinced your professors to like you, and found atleast one friend willing to eat at Wag with you, the harsh reality sets in. You’re essentially alone.
It is time to do the one thing that everyone has been preaching to you since orientation, get involved! One of the best ways to meet new people, acquire leadership skills, help others and even get organized is to join a fraternity or sorority.
“I don’t regret one thing about joining a sorority. It has made my time at UNCW the best it can be,” said Annie Henry, the President of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority.
Sure, there are stigmas attached to Greek life. Your mom told you not to join because all they do is drink and party, and your dad doesn’t want you to “pay for your friends.” But, the truth about most fraternities and sororities is the exact opposite.
Yes, there are occasionally parties (that may have alcohol), but there are also plenty of sober events. Also, those checks you write out every semester are basically being spent on you. “People pay to be in any organization on campus in order to plan events on campus and function,” Henry said. Without the money the events would not be there for you to attend.
Greek recruitment is coming up next month (sororities September 8-14; fraternities September 14-20). So, if being alone is not your style anymore and you are ready to actually take the advice to “get involved,” then it’s time to sign up at: http://www.uncw.edu/stuaff/doso/greek-prospectivemembers.htm.
