The UNCW Diamond Hawk’s head coach Mark Scalf is the winningest baseball coach in school history with over 575 wins. The team has not had a losing season since 1998, yet with all that success, the 2010 Diamond Hawks are striving for something that has never been accomplished in school history. That goal can be described in one word — Omaha.
A little over a month before the season started, Robbie Monday and the rest of the seniors met to talk about their goal of reaching the College World Series in Omaha, Neb. One of the biggest flaws of the 2009 team was their lack of vocal and on-field leadership, but the 2010 seniors have taken a “will-not-fail” attitude and are determined to lead their team to Omaha when June rolls around. “We all have one common goal – Omaha, and if we are going to reach that plateau, we are going to have to step up more so than ever this year,” said Monday.
The team has been met with some high expectations, but Coach Scalf is making sure that these expectations will not lead to complacency. During spring training, Coach Scalf constantly reminded his players of their expectations, but more importantly, he wanted them to “take pride in being a member of this team and unit.” Coach Scalf focused on emphasizing the importance of each day and mentally preparing his team for the tough road ahead.
The Diamond Hawks were picked to finish second behind James Madison in the CAA, but people internally and outside of the program believe that this could be one of the strongest teams that UNCW has ever fielded. Not only does the team have the senior leadership, but they also boast a pitching staff with great depth. The team returns nine pitchers who made a start last year, but they are also expecting contributions from freshman Tyler DeLoach, Blaze Tart and Tom Timoney. Coach Scalf feels that pitching is one of the team’s biggest strengths as it gives him “a number of matchup options in the bullpen and in the rotation.” He also expects returning players Jesse Haney and Stephen Harrold to take on a bigger role in the bullpen this year.
The Diamond Hawks also have a couple of Preseason All-CAA picks in catcher Cody Stanley and DH Robbie Monday. Stanley is recovering from shoulder surgery on his non-throwing arm, but with questions of depth behind him, it will be interesting to see how he returns from this injury. Another player that has already impressed Coach Scalf and DH Robbie Monday is freshman Michael Bass. “I dare somebody to tell this kid he can’t do something,” said Monday. “He is a smaller guy, but he plays like he is the biggest guy on the team. I just can’t say enough about this kid.” Bass showed why he deserved such praise as he opened up his collegiate career with three hits and an RBI in the team’s second game of the season against Jacksonville.
The Diamond Hawks took two out of three against a very formidable Jacksonville team on the road where they struggled last year. Despite the fact that the team was only able to have seven on-field practices during spring training, Coach Scalf was impressed by the team’s performance during the first two games. “You win by pitching and defense,” said Coach Scalf, but those two areas faltered late in the game and resulted in a loss in the series finale.
“We played really solid and should have won every game,” said Monday, but I feel like we have a lot more talent to show and it will progress the more time we get on the field.” The season is barely underway, but if this is any indication of things to come, than the series win against defending A-Sun Champions Jacksonville may just be the beginning of this team’s long road to Omaha.

Dancing For a Cause

Dance for Liberation, a non-profit organization that uses live music, will hold their third event on March 18th highlighted with dancing and raffles to raise money for local and international causes that need our help. Aileen Haugh, the founder and director of Dance for Liberation, came up with this organization in September of 2009 and it has been growing ever since.
Haugh, a communication studies major at UNCW, wanted to bring together her passion to help others and the Wilmington community to raise money for charities in need. Dance for Liberation was created out of her desire to bring awareness to social inequalities through creative fundraisers.
Katelin Kight, the public relations coordinator, got involved with Dance for Liberation when she started supporting Haugh through the beginning steps of bringing the organization to fruition.
“My favorite part of being part of Dance of Liberation is definitely the people we donate to. With this upcoming event, ‘Kickin’ it for the Kids’, we actually got to go meet the kids [we’re raising for] and really learn more about the charity,” Kight says.
Since September, Dance for Liberation has grown bigger and better with each event.
“We started out really small, just me and two or three other people,” Haugh shares, “but now we have photographers and people who want to make flyers and auction off artwork. People are building off of how fast our organization is growing and it’s great!”
In just the past five months, Haugh and her team of organizers have already hosted two very successful events for different causes, both of which raised over $1,000 each.
Their first event, held this past November, was “Groove 4 Guatemala”. Money raised through cover charges and raffles was given to the women of Guatemala. Dance for Liberation worked with Friendship Bridge, another non-profit organization, to aid empowering women in need.
In January, Dance for Liberation hosted their second event, “Live for Lakota”. The proceeds from this event were given to the Lakota tribe in South Dakota. Dance for Liberation worked with students from UNCW’s social work department and have made a plan to deliver the money personally and spend some time with the tribe over their spring break.
All the proceeds that are received from this months “Kickin’ it for the Kids” event will be donated to the Houston More afterschool program to help provide everyday resources to families that need them.
“I am really excited about this event,” Haugh says, “The great thing about this event is that we’ve been able to go and visit the kids and see where our money is going. We have many performers and a raffle. It should be really great!”
“It’s lots of fun to do and helpful at the same time,” Kight says.
“Kickin’ it for the Kids” is being held on March 18th at Charley Brownz in Downtown Wilmington starting at 9 p.m. The night will include musical talent from Ethan Clark and Trevor Brown, both local musicians, and Snuff Daddy, from Richmond, Va. Cover is $5 for 21 and under and $3 for over 21.
To get involved with Dance for Liberation, contact Aileen Haugh at Dance4liberation@ymail.com and for more information check out the events website at http://dance4liberation.blogspot.com/

This month, The Wilmington Post had the pleasure of interviewing one of the most popular and unique boutiques on Wrightsville Beach, Hallelu. Hallelu is a boutique that was started by Catherine Yearwood and her husband six years ago. A native from Wrightsville Beach, Catherine returned home from her stint of living in California and noticed that there were no trendy boutiques offering the lower price points that she was accustomed to on the west coast. Catherine wanted to bring that to the beach so that everyone could afford to look trendy and fashionable, but at a much lower cost! Hallelu houses some
of the most chic and beachy-fun apparel, with designers such as:
Lush, Arc & Co, Mink Pink, Collective Concepts, The Addison Story, and many more! Mary Catherine an employee of Hallelu summarizes their boutique as having, ” A beachy vibe but still catering to people who still have a desire for fashion.” Something many of you might not know is that Hallelu is a consignment boutique also, which means you can bring in your gently used fashionable clothes to be sold in the store! Hallelu also carries some of the most unique and local jewelry, especially their line called “Half”. “Half United is a humanitarian food and merchandise company that fights the global hunger epidemic. Every time you purchase a Half product you give one or more pounds of rice away to a hungry family in need.” Hallelu is truly unique in the sense of their name brands, jewelry, resale, and even their store name! The store name Hallelu was chosen from the word Hallelujah which means “Praise the Lord” in which Caroline and her husband chose to reflect their faith. Inside the store you will find tons of displays of cute wraps, patterned dresses, cropped jackets, tunics, tees, skirts, etc etc they have everything, and all at reasonable price points! LUSH- one of their big lines has amazing clothes and all for around or under $40! Caroline also told me that she just returned back from a trade show recently and ordered tons of cute new clothing for the spring which is arriving as we speak!
Hallelu gets new shipment almost every day so stop in frequently and
check out why Hallelu is such a unique and great quality boutique!
With prices like this, and clothes this cute, you would have to be crazy not to stop by! They are located on Wrightsville Beach after the second bridge to the right, right behind Wings Surf Shop.

Excessive PDA is Far from OK

Dear Dating Doctor:
Maybe it’s just me, but I am repulsed by the amount of PDA (public displays of affection) that I observe others engaged in. Maybe I am just getting older and prudish (I am 31 and divorced). What do you think?
Tired of PDA
Dear Tired:
I too have noticed an abundance of PDA. Just last night I took a ride to the top of the Eiffel Tower at King’s Island. It was a beautiful, clear night. As I looked down and watched the water fountains dance with color, I heard a noise to my left that resembled the sound of a child sucking down the last drops of a milkshake. To my surprise, it was a young couple engaging in reverse CPR.
Lately, I had begun to wonder if I was overreacting to people involved in public lip-lock and body-Braille because I am a relationship columnist. But as I questioned friends, colleagues and readers, I found that they, too, had noticed peoples’ increasing openness in public.
What I am sensing is that people are generally sick of PDA and wish that others would learn to temper themselves. I couldn’t agree more. When I think of PDA, I envision a couple of high school teens groping each other by the bathrooms and pay phones at a mall or an athletic event (like they were ever there to shop or watch the game in the first place). But lately, I have seen it all, and the PDA has transcended all ages.
One couple of thirtysomethings sharing the same side of a booth in a restaurant, were so heavily engaged in the throws of passion, that a family of four (with two small children) left before their dinner had arrived. Another couple (in their mid 20s) while taking in a Red’s game, was attempting to discover just how inconspicuously they could maneuver their hands under the clothing of the other. Now granted, Reds games are boring, but this is still unacceptable.
These situations are examples of inappropriate PDA. Onlookers despise it. Participants revel in it. These moments are awkward for the observers who must endure them, and embarrassing for the “lusting” couples as well. Unfortunately, those lusting are so focused on their own self-gratification that they are oblivious to the atmosphere they have created.
A common thought I entertain is that if people go to these extremes in public, imagine what they must do in private. Their private lives are none of our business. Similarly, their physical relationships shouldn’t infringe on our lives. We shouldn’t have to encourage them to “get a room,” skip out on a wonderful meal or turn our heads at a ballgame in order to accommodate them. A very poor message is sent to children when teens and adults go too far in public. If these people truly respected one another, they would think before they acted and would not let body parts other than their brain do their thinking for them.
There is appropriate PDA. Romantic hand-holding, walking arm-in-arm or a brief, affectionate kiss. A loving smile. A private message whispered into a loved one’s ear. Opening doors for one another. This type of affection is charming, tolerable and endearing. An elderly couple exhibiting tenderness can warm our hearts and provide hope for our future.
PDA comes down to acts of lust versus terms of endearment. We simply ask to be spared the public mauling, grunting, slurping and groping. When we find ourselves in the mood to view such behavior, we can always tune into the Jerry Spring Show.

STOP MAKING EXCUSES FOR YOUR SIGNIFICANT OTHER
A vast majority of the questions I receive begin the same way…”I know my (boyfriend, girlfriend, husband, wife…) is busy and I’m sure they love me, but…” and then they proceed to describe the lack of attention, love, and respect they are receiving from their partner. They have become so desensitized to mediocrity that they have become numb to the basic minimum standards people exhibit when they love and respect one another.
My current mission regarding dating, relationships, romance, sex and marriage is to encourage people to stop making excuses for their partner’s lack of contribution and effort to their relationship. As human beings, we are often unaware that we are sending very strong messages to others. We may convey a message through the words we use and how we deliver them or by failing to express ourselves at a time when our words are wanted, needed or expected. We also expose our character and integrity through our actions or lack thereof. I believe in judging a person by their words and actions. Why? Because talk is cheap. Words dissipate – actions indicate.
If you find yourself making excuses for your partner’s lack of effort on a daily basis, it is time for that to come to an end. Your partner does not deserve to occupy space in your heart until they appropriately occupy space in your life – by being an equal participant.
You are worth more than you are receiving and while it may be scary to take the steps necessary to regain your self-respect and self-esteem, your happiness is worth the price. I would encourage you to follow the words of my friend Cindy Brock when she says, “It is better to live five minutes of something great, than a lifetime of nothing special.”

Local artists who are stuck playing their music in their basement or garage all have one thing in common. They obviously have a love for music but can’t quite seem to get their foot in the right door to land a gig on stage. Well, band members look no further.
Creativity, personality & energy is what Mixed Tape Grotto is all about. This organization reaches out to the talents of local bands and artists, bringing their determination and musical abilities from garage practices to local stage performances.
Trevor Brown and Aaron Harvey put this idea into action after having it loom around their heads for some time.
“We encourage the music scene by providing venues for musicians and their music each month… our goal is to create one mix tape CD a month with various local artists,” says Brown. The first event for Mixed Tape Grotto took place in October of 2009, brining a number of various types of music together, including local artist Sarah Kinlaw and James Ethan Clark. The evening took off with a bang with fans loading up for the first mix CD.
Ever since that October night, the track submissions and audition CD’s have been flowing into the hands of Brown and Harvey and things have been getting better and better for the team.
“We are gaining momentum,” says Brown. “Each month we get a good 25 to 30 submissions that we have to pick from… we choose ones which will flow together for the CD.”
Mixedtape Grotto has had two other release parties since October, with new music and a great environment at each one.
In January, Sara Brown, a UNCW senior who enjoys listening to live music and discovering new songs, attended the release party that was thrown at 16 Taps downtown.
“It was a really cool concert they had. I had never heard of this organization before January so I didn’t really know what to expect. The music started out real mellow and got louder as the night went on…the energy in the room definitely grew with the night,” Brown says. “I plan on coming to the next event that they host. I loved the atmosphere and everything it brought to the crowd.”
“We have big plans for the future,” Harvey comments. “This is growing to be something huge!”
Music submissions are always welcome to the group and can be accepted on their webpage at http://mixgrotto.com. You can also keep up with upcoming concerts and events by following them on twitter @MixTapeGrotto .

Dear Dating Doctor:
I am 26, attractive and have a great job and career. I find however that men in my age group don’t ask women out. “Dating” seems to have gone by the wayside. Do you think that women’s attitudes and the feminist movement have confused men?
Lonely and Not Liking It

Dear Lonely:
Women are perplexed all across America because the answer to your question is yes –men are confused (and so are women) as to what they perceive as politically correct dating practices.
Although the feminist movement has seen more active days (since most of what they espoused is now an accepted mindset), men have excellent long-term memories and are still attempting to sort out where they stand socially with women.
Certain men may be intimidated by the fact that you are attractive and are anticipating that they will be rejected as not good enough to approach you. Others may be hesitant because you have established such a successful career or may live by the motto, “I can’t get rejected if I don’t ask!” If they refrain from asking you out on a date, they can’t get “dissed.”
Men are confused. Should they sincerely compliment women at work, at lunch, at the gym or bookstore or will their advances be perceived as harassment? Should they be the aggressor and approach women about a social opportunity or wait for the perfect moment to suggest a joint venture where they can go “Dutch” (as not to offend her sense of independence)? Should they make a concerted effort to “pick up the tab” (an expected behavior learned from their parents and grandparents over decades) or quickly concede so that real or perceived expectations do not surface? This, men claim, makes them appear cheap, uncaring and non-committal.
This confusion among men has spawned the “brother, not lover” mentality. Straight, single men who prefer simple platonic partnerships (and a peck on the cheek) to physical and emotional interpersonal intimacy. There is less opportunity for misunderstanding and disappointment.

What’s the answer? Communication, assertiveness and flexibility by both men and women. Don’t be hesitant to ask men out. Simply make eye contact, smile and say “Hello.” You will only have to do it once. They’ll take it from there. Be clear about your expectations and desires up front. Men follow directions quite well, it is trial and error that we’re not very comfortable with.

Let him know that you appreciate being treated like a lady (as long as it is his nature to do so), but still desire the freedom to live independently. In short, men and women need to stop playing games and end the madness. Life is far too short.

Valentines Day Help for The Men

Never buy a gift for her that infers that at some point in time she will be using it on you (hair trimmers, cookware, etc.)

Even if you just began dating someone, get her SOMETHING. To give her nothing, sends a very strong, irreversible message.

Never buy something that is alive (a fish, turtle, dog, cat, bird…) or something that should be and isn’t (a fur coat, alligator shoes, etc.).

Never spend more than 1.5 times more on them than they spent on you. In other words, if you anticipate them spending $100 on you, then spend no more than about $150 on her. Don’t get into “Can you top this!”

Don’t wait until Feb. 14th to give her your gift(s), give them to her on Feb. 13th with a little handwritten note that says, “No one as special as you should have to wait another day!”

Give her one flower, not a dozen and maybe about a red rose simply because it is so cliche.

Give gifts that show you have listened to her. Perhaps she mentioned something weeks or months ago and figured you forgot. Show her you didn’t forget and you will never forget what happens next!

Give her one flower and one gift every day from Feb. 1 to Feb. 14 and culminate with the ultimate gift that day.

What about for guys who hate to go out and shop? Then Shop on-line. I am doing some work with MSNShopping.com and they post ideas for men who don’t have a clue, as well as for those who have listened carefully to what their lover wants. The beautiful thing about shopping on line for men is that they have hundreds of vendors under one umbrella like MSN and it appears as if they drove all over town when in reality they never left home!

This is not a simple up and down par save. No various assortments of skillful shots will be able to help Tiger through this predicament. Regardless of what the man does throughout the rest of his career he will always be defined by what has surfaced since Thanksgiving. Just in case you haven’t been paying attention to the biggest sports story of 2009 let me give you the abbreviated version; Tiger Woods was in a car accident, has been “allegedly” involved with multiple women other than his wife, and his sponsors/world is crumbling around him. It is a story that keeps snowballing and its unique aspects will be analyzed. I would like to touch on but a few of those, including its impact on golf, his family, and his future. And Like Tiger I will attempt to sort out this mess…
First of all, let us try to get a grasp on the magnitude of this story. The Tiger Woods saga was on the front page of the New York Post for a record 20 days, passing a little story called 9/11. Unbelievable that with so much else going on in our world that this story has this kind of impact, but that is another argument for another time. There are no parallels to this. Some say it’s a lot like the Kobe Bryant situation but guess what Tiger is much bigger than Kobe. According to Forbes magazine, Woods is the first billion dollar athlete. He is a brand that makes the sport of golf relevant, and what do these events say about the sport of golf which is supposedly a gentlemen’s game? He has tarnished the game, his image, and most importantly the relationship with his family. Be that as it may, it probably won’t affect him on the course.
Tiger will come back to golf and will continue to be the best. He will go on to break Jack Nicklaus’ majors winning record and may be remembered as the best in the history of golf. Unfortunately for Tiger none of these accomplishments can undo what he has done. Although his actions will never be forgotten, playing and playing well is the only way he will be able to move on. Let’s be honest, whether you love Tiger or love to hate Tiger, we all want to see him back on the golf course. Worst case scenario, he’s back by The Masters.
None of that matters to Elin Nordegren, also known as Mrs. Woods. We all know he cheated not only because of the accusations but because Tiger himself has apologized for his discretions. Whether he cheated with 12 women (as the media is reporting), 6 women or 1 woman it doesn’t matter. All those numbers address are the severity of his personal problem. Tiger is human, he has problems (major problems) and it has cost him not only from a financial standpoint. We all know Elin didn’t bash out the back of Tiger’s ride to save him from the big bad fire hydrant. She did a number on not only the car but rumor is to his trophy room and his face (broken nose, chipped teeth, possibly more). Although this is purely speculative it does make sense because he is yet to make a public appearance. Not only is Elin going to abandon ship, so are many of his sponsors. Accenture and AT&T are some of what is sure to be only a taste of what is to come. Tiger like any other human being should be and is paying for what he has done.
It is the story that never ends. More and more women claim to being with Tiger as his world continues to unravel. Woods’ real colors don’t consist of his Sunday red. Even though he asks for privacy, he shall receive none here. He didn’t want privacy when he was making his billion dollars. You can’t pick and choose when you want to be famous. The true Tiger has come out of the Woods.

This month The Wilmington Post had the pleasure of putting the spotlight on one of the most chic and avant garde boutiques in Wilmington; Island Passage Elixir. A sister store to Island Passage located at Lumina Station, Island Passage Elixir is located downtown on Market Street, home to some of Wilmington’s most unique and trendy stores. The stores manager Hannah best describes the stores style as “a trendier and more soho chic version of their main store island Passage”. Some of the trendy well known designer brands found here are Free People, Luluvia, and Ella Moss. The boutique also houses a fabulous jewelry collection with tons of unique necklaces and earrings; each piece different from the rest. The cute clothes and accessories are what drives customers to this store, celebrities too. One tree Hill’s Bethany Joy Galeotti shops at Island Passage Elixir not only for her character played on the show, Haley Scott, but for her own personal wardrobe. The boutique has a variety of price points to fit all of their customers’ needs, and even lower price points at their consignment store Return Passage located a couple blocks away on Grace Street. The girls at Island Passage Elixir are very friendly, fashionable, passionate, and knowledgeable about their boutique, and can’t wait for you to stop by! They are located on 4 Market Street, in downtown Wilmington.

This week we stay downtown with two bars with seemingly different atmospheres. Clubs and Bars are always changing and hot spots can change overnight but this week we bring you two fun nightclubs, Club Pravda and Liquid Room, which are two bars that will guarantee you a good a time.
Pravda is located right beside Olive or Twist and across from the street from RIZE. Pravda is a Russian themed bar, has the highest selection of vodka, and features a wide range of music from 80’s to electronic music. UNCW student Chris told us, “Here you will find a one of a kind bar experience.” Complete with huge projection televisions, two pool tables, an outside smoking area, a huge dance floor, and a wrap around bar that is one of the largest in the area, this place has something to offer for everyone. It is definitely a nicer bar and you may have to spend a few extra dollars to have as good of a time as you would like but it is worth it.
Liquid Room is one of the most hospitable bars around. Located at the corner of Market and Front Street, Liquid Room is definitely a “must see.” If you would like to rent it out and have a themed party and come to them with an idea, they will make it happen. Liquid Room is a two story bar, the downstairs is a low key area with a full bar. Upstairs at Liquid Room also has a full bar as well as a huge dance floor. “I love dancing at Liquid Room!” said UNCW student Stephanie. There is also an overhanging lounge area equipped with plenty of couches if you get tired of dancing.
So if you’re out looking for something to do or have a themed event planned, Pravda and Liquid Room are great places to get the ball rolling. Check them out and I promise you won’t be disappointed.
