Local artists who are stuck playing their music in their basement or garage all have one thing in common. They obviously have a love for music but can’t quite seem to get their foot in the right door to land a gig on stage. Well, band members look no further.
Creativity, personality & energy is what Mixed Tape Grotto is all about. This organization reaches out to the talents of local bands and artists, bringing their determination and musical abilities from garage practices to local stage performances.
Trevor Brown and Aaron Harvey put this idea into action after having it loom around their heads for some time.
“We encourage the music scene by providing venues for musicians and their music each month… our goal is to create one mix tape CD a month with various local artists,” says Brown. The first event for Mixed Tape Grotto took place in October of 2009, brining a number of various types of music together, including local artist Sarah Kinlaw and James Ethan Clark. The evening took off with a bang with fans loading up for the first mix CD.
Ever since that October night, the track submissions and audition CD’s have been flowing into the hands of Brown and Harvey and things have been getting better and better for the team.
“We are gaining momentum,” says Brown. “Each month we get a good 25 to 30 submissions that we have to pick from… we choose ones which will flow together for the CD.”
Mixedtape Grotto has had two other release parties since October, with new music and a great environment at each one.
In January, Sara Brown, a UNCW senior who enjoys listening to live music and discovering new songs, attended the release party that was thrown at 16 Taps downtown.
“It was a really cool concert they had. I had never heard of this organization before January so I didn’t really know what to expect. The music started out real mellow and got louder as the night went on…the energy in the room definitely grew with the night,” Brown says. “I plan on coming to the next event that they host. I loved the atmosphere and everything it brought to the crowd.”
“We have big plans for the future,” Harvey comments. “This is growing to be something huge!”
Music submissions are always welcome to the group and can be accepted on their webpage at http://mixgrotto.com. You can also keep up with upcoming concerts and events by following them on twitter @MixTapeGrotto .

Men are Confused About the “Rules” of Dating

Dear Dating Doctor:
I am 26, attractive and have a great job and career. I find however that men in my age group don’t ask women out. “Dating” seems to have gone by the wayside. Do you think that women’s attitudes and the feminist movement have confused men?
Lonely and Not Liking It

Dear Lonely:
Women are perplexed all across America because the answer to your question is yes –men are confused (and so are women) as to what they perceive as politically correct dating practices.
Although the feminist movement has seen more active days (since most of what they espoused is now an accepted mindset), men have excellent long-term memories and are still attempting to sort out where they stand socially with women.
Certain men may be intimidated by the fact that you are attractive and are anticipating that they will be rejected as not good enough to approach you. Others may be hesitant because you have established such a successful career or may live by the motto, “I can’t get rejected if I don’t ask!” If they refrain from asking you out on a date, they can’t get “dissed.”
Men are confused. Should they sincerely compliment women at work, at lunch, at the gym or bookstore or will their advances be perceived as harassment? Should they be the aggressor and approach women about a social opportunity or wait for the perfect moment to suggest a joint venture where they can go “Dutch” (as not to offend her sense of independence)? Should they make a concerted effort to “pick up the tab” (an expected behavior learned from their parents and grandparents over decades) or quickly concede so that real or perceived expectations do not surface? This, men claim, makes them appear cheap, uncaring and non-committal.
This confusion among men has spawned the “brother, not lover” mentality. Straight, single men who prefer simple platonic partnerships (and a peck on the cheek) to physical and emotional interpersonal intimacy. There is less opportunity for misunderstanding and disappointment.

What’s the answer? Communication, assertiveness and flexibility by both men and women. Don’t be hesitant to ask men out. Simply make eye contact, smile and say “Hello.” You will only have to do it once. They’ll take it from there. Be clear about your expectations and desires up front. Men follow directions quite well, it is trial and error that we’re not very comfortable with.

Let him know that you appreciate being treated like a lady (as long as it is his nature to do so), but still desire the freedom to live independently. In short, men and women need to stop playing games and end the madness. Life is far too short.

Valentines Day Help for The Men

Never buy a gift for her that infers that at some point in time she will be using it on you (hair trimmers, cookware, etc.)

Even if you just began dating someone, get her SOMETHING. To give her nothing, sends a very strong, irreversible message.

Never buy something that is alive (a fish, turtle, dog, cat, bird…) or something that should be and isn’t (a fur coat, alligator shoes, etc.).

Never spend more than 1.5 times more on them than they spent on you. In other words, if you anticipate them spending $100 on you, then spend no more than about $150 on her. Don’t get into “Can you top this!”

Don’t wait until Feb. 14th to give her your gift(s), give them to her on Feb. 13th with a little handwritten note that says, “No one as special as you should have to wait another day!”

Give her one flower, not a dozen and maybe about a red rose simply because it is so cliche.

Give gifts that show you have listened to her. Perhaps she mentioned something weeks or months ago and figured you forgot. Show her you didn’t forget and you will never forget what happens next!

Give her one flower and one gift every day from Feb. 1 to Feb. 14 and culminate with the ultimate gift that day.

What about for guys who hate to go out and shop? Then Shop on-line. I am doing some work with MSNShopping.com and they post ideas for men who don’t have a clue, as well as for those who have listened carefully to what their lover wants. The beautiful thing about shopping on line for men is that they have hundreds of vendors under one umbrella like MSN and it appears as if they drove all over town when in reality they never left home!

This is not a simple up and down par save. No various assortments of skillful shots will be able to help Tiger through this predicament. Regardless of what the man does throughout the rest of his career he will always be defined by what has surfaced since Thanksgiving. Just in case you haven’t been paying attention to the biggest sports story of 2009 let me give you the abbreviated version; Tiger Woods was in a car accident, has been “allegedly” involved with multiple women other than his wife, and his sponsors/world is crumbling around him. It is a story that keeps snowballing and its unique aspects will be analyzed. I would like to touch on but a few of those, including its impact on golf, his family, and his future. And Like Tiger I will attempt to sort out this mess…
First of all, let us try to get a grasp on the magnitude of this story. The Tiger Woods saga was on the front page of the New York Post for a record 20 days, passing a little story called 9/11. Unbelievable that with so much else going on in our world that this story has this kind of impact, but that is another argument for another time. There are no parallels to this. Some say it’s a lot like the Kobe Bryant situation but guess what Tiger is much bigger than Kobe. According to Forbes magazine, Woods is the first billion dollar athlete. He is a brand that makes the sport of golf relevant, and what do these events say about the sport of golf which is supposedly a gentlemen’s game? He has tarnished the game, his image, and most importantly the relationship with his family. Be that as it may, it probably won’t affect him on the course.
Tiger will come back to golf and will continue to be the best. He will go on to break Jack Nicklaus’ majors winning record and may be remembered as the best in the history of golf. Unfortunately for Tiger none of these accomplishments can undo what he has done. Although his actions will never be forgotten, playing and playing well is the only way he will be able to move on. Let’s be honest, whether you love Tiger or love to hate Tiger, we all want to see him back on the golf course. Worst case scenario, he’s back by The Masters.
None of that matters to Elin Nordegren, also known as Mrs. Woods. We all know he cheated not only because of the accusations but because Tiger himself has apologized for his discretions. Whether he cheated with 12 women (as the media is reporting), 6 women or 1 woman it doesn’t matter. All those numbers address are the severity of his personal problem. Tiger is human, he has problems (major problems) and it has cost him not only from a financial standpoint. We all know Elin didn’t bash out the back of Tiger’s ride to save him from the big bad fire hydrant. She did a number on not only the car but rumor is to his trophy room and his face (broken nose, chipped teeth, possibly more). Although this is purely speculative it does make sense because he is yet to make a public appearance. Not only is Elin going to abandon ship, so are many of his sponsors. Accenture and AT&T are some of what is sure to be only a taste of what is to come. Tiger like any other human being should be and is paying for what he has done.
It is the story that never ends. More and more women claim to being with Tiger as his world continues to unravel. Woods’ real colors don’t consist of his Sunday red. Even though he asks for privacy, he shall receive none here. He didn’t want privacy when he was making his billion dollars. You can’t pick and choose when you want to be famous. The true Tiger has come out of the Woods.

This month The Wilmington Post had the pleasure of putting the spotlight on one of the most chic and avant garde boutiques in Wilmington; Island Passage Elixir. A sister store to Island Passage located at Lumina Station, Island Passage Elixir is located downtown on Market Street, home to some of Wilmington’s most unique and trendy stores. The stores manager Hannah best describes the stores style as “a trendier and more soho chic version of their main store island Passage”. Some of the trendy well known designer brands found here are Free People, Luluvia, and Ella Moss. The boutique also houses a fabulous jewelry collection with tons of unique necklaces and earrings; each piece different from the rest. The cute clothes and accessories are what drives customers to this store, celebrities too. One tree Hill’s Bethany Joy Galeotti shops at Island Passage Elixir not only for her character played on the show, Haley Scott, but for her own personal wardrobe. The boutique has a variety of price points to fit all of their customers’ needs, and even lower price points at their consignment store Return Passage located a couple blocks away on Grace Street. The girls at Island Passage Elixir are very friendly, fashionable, passionate, and knowledgeable about their boutique, and can’t wait for you to stop by! They are located on 4 Market Street, in downtown Wilmington.

This week we stay downtown with two bars with seemingly different atmospheres. Clubs and Bars are always changing and hot spots can change overnight but this week we bring you two fun nightclubs, Club Pravda and Liquid Room, which are two bars that will guarantee you a good a time.
Pravda is located right beside Olive or Twist and across from the street from RIZE. Pravda is a Russian themed bar, has the highest selection of vodka, and features a wide range of music from 80’s to electronic music. UNCW student Chris told us, “Here you will find a one of a kind bar experience.” Complete with huge projection televisions, two pool tables, an outside smoking area, a huge dance floor, and a wrap around bar that is one of the largest in the area, this place has something to offer for everyone. It is definitely a nicer bar and you may have to spend a few extra dollars to have as good of a time as you would like but it is worth it.
Liquid Room is one of the most hospitable bars around. Located at the corner of Market and Front Street, Liquid Room is definitely a “must see.” If you would like to rent it out and have a themed party and come to them with an idea, they will make it happen. Liquid Room is a two story bar, the downstairs is a low key area with a full bar. Upstairs at Liquid Room also has a full bar as well as a huge dance floor. “I love dancing at Liquid Room!” said UNCW student Stephanie. There is also an overhanging lounge area equipped with plenty of couches if you get tired of dancing.

Why “Nice Guys” Fail To Win A Woman’s Heart!

Since I am receiving a multitude of email on this subject every single day, I felt it was time to set the record straight once and for all. Read nice guys…read.
Why do “nice guys” fail so often with women? You divulge too much information too quickly. You appear too needy and too desperate. You try to take care of a woman’s every want, need and desire, before she even knows what they are herself. You leave no mystery. You leave no challenge for women to triumph over. You are fearful that once you leave a woman’s presence, you also leave her mind. What you don’t realize is that if you have captured a woman’s imagination, attention or interest in some way, it is the moment that you leave her presence, she can’t get you out of her mind.
When you smother a woman, by calling too much, emailing too often, texting too often, being around all the time, you send a very strong message that you have low self-esteem and have little confidence that she will want you just for you or just to be with you. If a woman can sense that you have a successful, independent, exciting and interesting life WITHOUT HER, she may want a life or relationship WITH YOU. If she can sense that she is your entire focus and “reason for being” she may never want one with you. Why? She doesn’t have to….as you aren’t going anywhere. She can do whatever she wants, date whomever she wants, for as long as she wants, and come back to you weeks, months or years later and be confident that you will STILL be waiting for her. Who wants a guy like that? Not a strong, confident, independent woman who loves a good challenge.
If a woman loses her feeling of passion for you, rarely will she pursue you. Nice guys cause this loss of passion by being too available, too often, in too many ways. Back off, show confidence in yourself and live a life independent of her. Remember, everyone wants what they cannot have. It is okay to let a woman know that you have an interest in her, but then you must have the confidence and courage to back WAY OFF and give her a chance to MISS YOU.
Good luck nice guys, you’re going to need it!

How to Spot a Lie!

Dear Dating Doctor:
We don’t date one another, but realized that we are constantly being lied to by those people we date. We also realized that we aren’t very good at knowing when we are being lied to. How can we get better at spotting a lie?
-Adam and Eve

Dear Sinners,
Like you, I despise being lied to. I see it as the lowest form of cowardice. Usually, I can ascertain that it is happening. But some people are so proficient at lying that it becomes nearly undetectable.
To provide you with as much information as possible, I interviewed a number of people who are “experienced” at being lied to. They ranged from spouses who were cheated on, to landlords, policemen, and IRS agents. Here is a composite list of the characteristics they said to look for. The liar in question may:

not be able to look you in the eyes. They will avoid eye contact and end it quickly if it accidentally occurs.

exhibit irregular pauses when speaking. If they pause before speaking, they may be searching for the right words or answer. If they pause at the end, they may be watching your response to see if they successfully pulled off their scam.

stutter, blink uncontrollably and laugh nervously after speaking.

continually touch their face, mouth, nose or ears while talking.

appear nervous or preoccupied. They fidget by tapping their feet, fingers or playing with their jewelry.

have their exact story down pat. But when interrupted, be unable to resume from the point where they left off.

contradict themselves. Their version of the truth changes over time.

talk louder or with their hands to further emphasize their point.

use the word “really” often. “Really, he/she is only a friend.”

act surprisingly nice, helpful or caring in order to mask their guilt.

Band Interview with Sci Fi

Electro-jazz fusion, live jazz electronica, and electro space jazz are all terms that local band “Sci Fi” would use to describe their music genre, but their ever-changing style is something that makes you want to see this band more than once. Sci Fi’s members have played hundreds of shows together since the creation of the band three and a half years ago, but their merging styles and improvisation make each show different than the last.

Sci Fi’s three members include bassist Tim Philpott, drummer, percussionist and vocalist, Justin Heter and keyboardist, percussionist and vocalist Tyler Simmons. The group has been together for three and a half years and has grown from a small, local band trying to land a gig, to the stages of nationally recognized festivals such as Bonnaroo. The band got the idea for the name Sci Fi from keyboardist and percussionist Tyler’s nickname, “Sci Fi Ty.” After realizing that they were all a little strange and different just like their style of music, they decided on the name and it stuck.

Although the name has been the same since the beginning, each member of the band would definitely agree that they have changed since the days of playing house parties. Having toured the East Coast over the summer and playing in a number of different cities, the evolution of their music was not the only thing changing. Their stories range from the time they bought a full-size school bus to the time they played a four and a half hour show at 5 a.m. for Ashefest after playing another gig the previous night.

“We finally felt like we made it,” said Justin Heter after describing Sci Fi’s performance at Ashefest that night, but each member of the band gives at least some of the credit to their manager and owner of Coma Gun Music Joel Stout. Stout has helped Sci Fi grow from the beginning and played an integral role in setting up their East Coast tour over the summer.

Most people think that touring with a band would consist of a lot of wild nights and fun times and you must be crazy if you think that Sci Fi is going to tell you something different. Many of us can imagine the great times that these guys must have, but the one thing that they love the most about being on the road is seeing new places and meeting new people. The creation of Sci Fi has allowed the members to visit places that they probably would not have been able to see otherwise. Although they go on tour to promote the band and introduce their music to a new audience, Heter said that all you can do is “Be glad you can barely make it and just have fun.”

Having fun is something that Sci Fi has no problem doing and it has helped them become known on the regional and national level. They take that energy and enthusiasm onto the stage during each one of their shows. Sci Fi describes their music as “soulful” as this allows the audience to “see what we’re going through.” Their improvisation also gives each member the independence to do what they want as well as make each show a unique experience for the audience.

Sci Fi has played all over the country, introducing their style to new listeners, but they have not forgotten their Wilmington roots. Each 4th of July, Sci Fi performs at the Soapbox and they continue another tradition this year by playing at The Whiskey on Halloween. If you can’t make it out to one of their shows, you can go to http://www.scifimusic.net/ to download their Sci Fi Live Album for free. You can also find Sci Fi at http://www.myspace.com/scifimusic where you can learn more about the band and view videos of their previous shows.

Make Or Break Year For Seahawks Hoops

I remember a time when opposing teams feared coming to Trask Coliseum. Teams knew they were in for a long night against a tough defense and a brutal student section decked out in teal. Things have changed a little bit since then, highlighted by the fact that UNCW basketball hasn’t been to the NCAA tournament since the 2005-2006 campaign. As the Seahawks have slid from being a perennial CAA power so too have the fans that have filled Trask in years past. The students, community and basketball team itself (although the team may not admit it) is desperate for this year to be a successful season if basketball is to continue to be the sport at UNCW.

Head Coach Benny Moss brought in a new philosophy following the Brad Brownell era , which no matter how you look at it has changed the identity of UNCW basketball. The Seahawks have turned into an offensive minded ball club that push the ball and spend much of game shooting from beyond the arc. This may be exciting to some but is yet to excite in the wins column. In three years as Head Coach, Moss has the overall record of 34-60 and 20-38 in CAA play. In his defense, the 2006-2007 season was plagued by injury and he hasn’t had a full complement of players which he has recruited, until now.

This year the team returns all five starters from last year, including its leader in scoring (15.6 ppg), assists (4.4), and steals (2.2) Chad Tomko. Tomko is to be joined by seven new players, including three freshman and four transfers. For the first time in his tenure Coach Moss and Tomko for that matter, will have a presence down low in the now eligible ECU transfer John Fields and a healthy Will Ohuaregbe. This means good things also for the athletic Dominque Lacy (10.4 ppg, 5.9 rpg) who was often forced in seasons past to play out of position. Lacy should be able to slash, shoot that 12-15 foot jumper and stay out of foul trouble with this new look squad. Also, look for a more effective Johnny Wolf (13.9 ppg) as he should benefit from this revamped lineup as well. High expectations loom as these Seahawks enter the 2009-2010 season.

Highlighting this years schedule are non-conference matchups against George Washington and Wake Forest. George Washington being the same school that came back from an 18-point deficit in the first round of the 2006 NCAA tournament to beat UNCW in the 8-9 seed game. Hopefully a little piece of revenge will be in store for the Colonials after that heartbreak on Sunday, November 15th at Trask Coliseum. The Demon Deacons of Wake Forest University also visit UNCW early in the season, as the Seahawks will attempt to upset this national power and its NBA talent Al-Faroug Aminu on December 16th. All the basketball action officially starts Friday, November 13th as UNCW visits Appalachian State.

Up high and down low, this week we will take a look at a fifth floor bar on the river downtown and then go low to a laid back basement bar. The flashing lights of Level 5 and the dim lighting of The Cellar are two unique experiences.

This month we make our way back downtown to Level 5 at City Stage. Located at 21 North Front Street across the street from RIZE, this distinctive bar has been offering bar goers an experience unlike most others. The roof top bar has recently been renovated adding new awnings, slide panel doors, and heaters. Overlooking waterfront Wilmington while having drinks with friends can be a great experience but like the saying goes you get what you pay for. Unlike muggy sweat infested bars below it, you are going to have to pay premium prices for a premium time with your friends. By a premium time I mean having a good drink on the rooftop of a classy bar. In the words of UNCW student Ryan, “It’s expensive but it’s worth it, quality over quantity.” Level 5 offers views of the river and downtown Wilmington. Although Level 5 may be a little pricy this is a bar I would recommend visiting as often as possible. Even if it means saving up your pay check.

Take it down a couple floors to The Cellar and you will get a completely different experience and one a little easier on the wallet. The Cellar, located on the street right behind Pravda, is a more relaxed place with dim lighting, ample leather couches and stools to hang out on. It also offers an open patio, penny pool tables, electronic dart boards, and features a recently added Wii for entertainment, not seen in many bars. The place is huge which helps in keeping the crowd size down. It is also tucked in off the main roads so it doesn’t get too overwhelming in the first place. If you want to have a good time relaxing and having a few drinks at decent prices then this is the place for you. UNCW junior Sean, said “The Cellar is a sick place for us to go and just chill.” They also are very open to having private parties. They understand that if they help their customers out, their customers will help them out. Great people, great drinks, and a great place. The Cellar is definitely an experience all should indulge upon.
